Prosthodontics is a recognized dental specialty pertaining to the diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation, and maintenance of the oral function, comfort, appearance, and health of patients with clinical conditions associated with missing or deficient teeth and/or oral and maxillofacial tissues.
Prosthodontists are THE recognized experts when anything needs to be replaced in your mouth. This can range from a single tooth, multiple teeth, or all teeth and gums in the mouth. The oral prostheses replacing teeth may be removable dentures or partial dentures or permanently fixed tooth prostheses, connected to remaining teeth or implanted in the alveolar bone. Other prostheses include veneers/ crowns and caps that replace the outer portions of teeth, improve the aesthetics of a smile and/or protect the remaining tooth's surface from damage. There are two main types of material used to fabricate a veneer: acrylic composites and dental porcelain. Whilst, Crowns are often needed when a large cavity threatens the ongoing health of a tooth. They are typically bonded to the tooth using a dental cement.
